The Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Road features several designated stops and wildlife hubs. Drivers navigate an 18-mile semi-circle through open grasslands and pine-speckled hills.

These key stops range from historic 1920s architecture to stretches of road dominated by feral burros. Stop by pulling completely off the road and to the right of the white line to view animals safely.

The Begging Burros

15-30 minutesExpect traffic delays

A feral band of burros lives along a specific stretch of the road. These descendants of old trail-riding herds regularly approach vehicles. They will physically block traffic and stick their heads into open car windows.
